This time last year, 34 year old Jemma decided it was time for a New Year’s fitness kick. With a few hen parties coming up abroad, getting that bikini body ready was an absolute must.
An alternative way to workout
A friend had visited Sweat Studios before and told Jemma she should give it a go. Although hesitant at first, other exercises like spinning and circuits never seemed to fit with her schedule or give her what she needed. Yoga was definitely worth a try:
“Sweat is a lovely place to exercise. Not only is it a nice physical environment, but there’s always a friendly atmosphere and all of the teachers know your name. The best thing is that you can be in a room full of people but still feel like you’re on your own, concentrating on your own practice without needing to worry about anyone else. It’s the perfect environment for those that are a bit self-conscious, which I was.”
Losing weight and more with yoga
Within 7 months Jemma successfully lost two stone. Not only did she achieve an incredible weight loss; she’s much stronger too. Her skiing trip last March showed that even a couple of months of yoga could make a dramatic difference to her fitness and endurance. She’s looking forward to seeing how much stronger again she is when she goes this year – especially if the recent 10k run in MK is anything to go by!
Now that Jemma doesn’t commute to London every day she’s swapped reading on the train for an hour of yoga after work instead:
“Yoga fits perfectly in my life. After a hectic day, I use it to get some focused time and, while I started out in the Hot Classic classes which are great for burning calories and really easy to follow, I’m now enjoying getting myself into Flow classes as a new challenge. My aim is to make sure that a ‘Downward Dog’ feels like a rest position… I’ll get there!”
You don’t need to be flexible to do yoga
When we asked Jemma what she would say to someone considering yoga she said:
“Many friends tell me that they avoid yoga because they can’t touch their toes. I tell them that’s exactly the reason to be doing yoga. There’s a whole range of people that do it and there’s nothing to be frightened of. After 10 minutes of my first class, any worries I had were completely gone.”
