That yoga improves your flexibility is well known, but it has loads of other great benefits too:

Yoga Benefits

  • Improves your cardiovascular fitness, strength and muscle tone (whereas pumping iron in the gym gives you muscle bulk, yoga builds lean, toned muscle. Great if you want to look healthy and fit without impersonating the Hulk).
  • Takes joints through their full range of motion, helping prevent degenerative arthritis and other ailments by keeping cartilage healthy.
  • Strengthens bones and helps ward off osteoporosis. It also keeps your spine supple, preventing back pain.
  • Improves circulation, increases the oxygen to your cells and thins the blood helping ward off heart attacks and strokes. Also helps you to fight stress.
  • Develops your balance* (*not applicable after a few drinks).
  • Releases toxins, improves your lymphatic and immune system helping to fight infection.
  • Boosts your aerobic fitness, lowers your resting heart rate and increases endurance.
  • Can help reduce high blood pressure.
  • Lowers cortisol levels (that’s the scientific jargon for the stuff that has been associated with depression, high blood pressure,  and weight gain insulin resistance).
  • Increases serotonin levels, the happy hormone!
  • Burns calories, lowers blood sugar and bad cholesterol and boosts good cholesterol.
  • *All of the above benefits, it goes without saying, only apply to those who try! With yoga, you get out what you put in. What we will guarantee though, is that yoga can be as good a workout as you’d get in the gym, with many more added health benefits.

    Hot? For what?

At Sweat our classes are taught in purpose-built temperature and humidity controlled studios. At our Milton Keynes studio we offer hot yoga classes. Hot yoga has a number of benefits, here’s the lowdown:

  • Your muscles are more elastic and less prone to injury. (If you can’t touch your toes at home you may find you surprise yourself in a hot yoga studio!)
  • Sweating helps you detox: removing waste products like lactic acid and carbon dioxide, as well as whatever it was you drank at the pub last night.
  • Warm muscles burn fat more easily.
  • It makes for a great (and safe) cardiovascular workout.
